Obituary 23 Feb 1948.
A Native of Wath on Dearne Yorkshire England where he was born on May 26 1867, he emigrated to Canada as a youth and entered the United States 60 years ago.
His studies for citizenship aroused interest in politics and his first public post was commisioner of parks in St Paul Minn.
He then founded the Union Advocate, a labour paper. After serving eight years as county commisioner of Ramsey County (St Paul), he came to Seattle in 1818.
He was attracted to Seattle by impressions gained on a tour of the West in behalf of labour union for clothing store clerks.
For a time he sold clothing and managed clothing stores but hisactivity in behalf of his fellowworkers won him the designation as the 'father' of the retail clerks' union.
His interest in labour also won him a post with the Washington State Department of Labour and Industries, a position that took him to Olympia from 1922 to 1924.
But his election as King County commisioner, city districtproved to be the greatest frustration of his life. As commisioner, his was a difficultrole during the regime of John C Stevenson.
ACTS WERE BLOCKED
In that six year period from 1933 until 1938 Mr Nash commonly is credited with having made but one appointment, his every other act having been blocked by the 'majority' combine.
He continued, however to hold eminence in the Democratic Party.
Always hatless, his silver-thatched figure and scolarly appearance bellied by 20 years his true age.
He was amember of Arcana Lodge, F and M St Paul, a past exalted ruler of the Elks,a life member of the Elks Lodge No 59, St Paul and the Nile Temple ofthe Shrine and Scottish Rite orders in Seattle.
Surviving are his widow, Mabel V, Seattle, a sister and a brother in England, and two nieces in St Paul.
2008 no mention of his children!!! jwe
After the County Commisioner post Louis was Dealing in Surplus Commodities for a time and then in September 1939 was appointed Deputy County Auditor in the Marriage Licence Department. He held this post till he died. jwe.
