Notes |
- Eliza ODD was the only child of James ODD and Maria COPPIN, born inCroydon, Surrey, England on the 24th of July 1850. (From Parish Reg.Extracts on Fiche at FHC)
As the Parish Register is illegible the date of her birth comesfrom the I.G.I. Fiche at the Family History Centre. It is not known whathad happened to her father James ODD or how they got to New Zealand. Theymay have lived in Australia first.
Mother Maria ODD and Henry CHESTERMAN supposedly married afterarriving in NZ. The Death Certificate for Maria CHESTERMAN says theymarried in Ahaura, but as yet nothing has been found. Maybe James ODD wasstill alive somewhere and they lost touch.
Eliza ODD married James Cato KITTELTY on the 7th of August 1866 atGreymouth, Westland, New Zealand. James Cato KITTELTY was a carrier andthey lived on the goldfields of Westland in the early years of theirmarriage.
They had four children, the third child Emma died at eleven monthson the goldfields, after being bitten by a rat. James left Eliza andtheir family and returned to Australia in 1873. There James Cato KITTELTYre-married in 1879 at Kilcundra, Australia. We are not sure if anyone oneknew where he was. James Cato was about 1843 in Australia and died 7th ofSeptember 1898 at Kilcundra, Australia.

3. Emma KITTELTY b. 31 July 1870 Greymouth
d. 25 June 1871
At the time of Emma's death they were living under canvas on theWestland goldfields. To keep the baby Emma happy in the mornings when sheawoke, her mother Eliza would place a biscuit under her pillow for her tonibble. Unfortunately one morning a rat had found the biscuit and bitEmma. She died of the resulting illness caused by the rat's bite, ateleven months of age.
4. Mary Henrietta KITTELTY b. 21 June 1872 at Ahaura.
d. 4 August 1966 at Nelson
Married 8th of May 1894 James EDGE, at Lyell.
We were never sure that Mary ( Dolly ) Henrietta was a KITTELTY. Onher birth certificate, she was born in Ahaura, and registered in Coban,Greymouth by her father James Cato KITTELY. So he was still in NewZealand and presumably still with Eliza. Mary Henrietta had always beennamed as ATKIN. Know that her grandson Peter PETTIT was surprised to findthat she was really a KITTELTY.
Eliza's second husband Walter ATKIN was in the area of Reefton andAhaura in the early 1860's, though there is no evidence of them havingco-habited earlier than after James' desertion of Eliza and theirchildren about 1873.
Their first child, Zenobia Atkin KITTELTY was born in June 1866 andlisted as illegitimate on the records. Walter ATKIN was her father.
A second daughter Millicent was born to Walter ATKIN and ElizaKITTELTY in Reefton on the 25th February 1878. Birth Cert. #1434.
It is the information on Millicent's Birth Registration in Reefton, that the mystery about where and when Walter & Eliza either 'gottogether' or married begins to unfold; 'Millicent daughter of ElizaATKIN, formerly KITTELTY, maiden name CHESTERMAN; aged 28yrs; bornSurrey, England; & Walter ATKIN; aged 29yrs; Compositor; born Melbourne;married 15 Dec 1873 at Ahaura.'
Eliza's maiden name was ODD. Her mother's second marriage was toHenry CHESTERMAN. Was this a ploy to be able register Millicent aslegitimate and hide the fact that Eliza was still married to JamesKITTELTY ? It certainly did become confusing, especially when they keptchanging the date of their supposed marriage.
A son Walter ATKIN was born at Ahaura on the 2nd February 1880;mother Ellen (Eliza) ATKIN formerly CHESTERMAN; aged 27yrs; bornVictoria; & father Walter ATKIN aged 28yrs; from Melbourne, Australia;married 23rd June 1873 at Ahaura. Informant Walter ATKIN (father) Kumara( Walter must have been working there at the time) . Birth Cert. #1575.
Note the different marriage dates. Once again Eliza's maiden namewas listed as CHESTERMAN not ODD, and there was no mention at all abouther married name of KITTELTY.
By the time they were living in Reefton, Eliza was carrying anotherchild. On the 22nd July 1882 Eliza and Walter ATKIN had a third daughternamed Beatrice. This time the information about Eliza was correct, thoughWalter's birthplace was still given as Melbourne. ( He was born in Co.Cork, Ireland.)
'Beatrice, daughter of Eliza ATKIN, formerly KITTELTY, maiden nameODD; born in Croydon, Surrey, & Walter ATKIN, compositor; aged 33yrs;born in Melbourne, Victoria; Married on 29 August 1882 at Ahaura.' Thebirth was registered after their marriage, possibly an attempt to makeher legitimate. Unfortunately the Registrar did not see it that way andas she was born in July 1882 Beatrice was therefore listed asillegitimate. Birth Cert. #3535.
Walter ATKIN married Eliza KITTELTY nee ODD, on the 29th of August1882 at the Registry Office, Ahaura. Information on the MarriageCertificate states that Eliza was a 'Married woman who has not heard fromher husband for more than seven years.' Walter's parents were given asWalter ATKIN, Barrister-at-Law and Margaret Hill ATKIN nee BELL. Eliza'sparents were given as James ODD, Labourer and Maria ODD nee COPPIN.Witnesses to the marriage were Eliza's mother Maria CHESTERMAN (formerlyODD nee COPPIN) Ahaura & Christian JOHNSON, Ahaura, a gardener. MarriageCert. # 2126
In 1884 their youngest child a son, Christopher John ATKIN was bornon the 7th of June 1884 at Reefton.
Eliza's mother Maria CHESTERMAN died at Reefton on the 2nd of August1887. She was buried at the Cronadon Cemetery, Reefton, on the 4th ofAugust 1887.
When daughter Eliza ATKIN wife of Walter died on the 27th of June1898, she was buried beside her mother at Reefton.
Henry CHESTERMAN was a gardener in the Reefton and Ahaura areas. Hedied on the 2nd of August 1914 aged 86 years, and was buried at Reeftonwith his wife Maria and daughter Eliza ATKIN.
The Monumental Inscription at the Reefton Old Cemetery.
"Maria Chesterman died 2nd Aug 1888 aged 56yrs. Also her beloved husbandHenry Chesterman died 12 Aug 1914 aged 86yrs. And Eliza ATKIN the beloveddaughter, died 27th June 1898 age 48yrs."
