• Notes

  Arrived at New York or Boston about 1835 but went on to Callao, Peru. Established a very successful business named Thomas Conroy & Sons. They were owners of extensive nitrate (sodium nitrate NaNO3) mines in the Atacama Desert area just south of Autofagasta, Peru (this City is now part of Chile). With his brother Peter he was also agent for the Bank of London. The brothers also brought the first Arabian race horses to the area and their memory is honored by the Jockey Club of Peru with an annual race called the "Thomas Conroy Classic."
