- Mary is a bit of a mystery. There are two entries in the IGI for her birth/bap at Pontefract. The first calls her 'Mary Scott Haigh', mum (only) Mary Ann Haigh. There is also a second entry for the baptism. This calls her 'Mary Scott', dad John Scott mum Ann.She never married. She was with William Hick in 1841 and 1861, niece. William married an Elizabeth Lawrence at Pontefract on 1 Jul 1830. They had a son William Bap 3 Jul 1831 at Pontefract. Elizabeth was born abt 1789 and baptised 13 Jan 1790 at Pontefract. Her dad was John and mum Ann (as were Joseph's). I haven't been able to find Elizabeth Hick in the 1841 census. By 1851 William had a wife Mary and a son William (20). Mary was with the Lowrances at Barnsley for all the other cencus up to 1891, as niece to Martha and cousin to John and Sarah. It's pretty certain that John Lawrence died and Ann remarried a Thomas Haigh. They had a daughter Mary Ann (half sister to Joseph and Elizabeth) (plus other childs). This is he Mary Ann mum to Mary. Dates and all add up.So Mary was actually half niece to both William Hick and Martha Lowrence (both by marriage).jwe 17/7/2006
