  • Notes
    • Born into an extremely poor family who lived in carlisle St Sheffield. He had 6 brothers and one sister. They had very little to eat, never had shoes and the father was an alcoholic. ASL would recount tales of going to the local pubs with his mother as she begged money prior to it being drunk. ASL was selling newspapers when 6/7. ASL volunteered in1914 ,(he had his first shoes then) became a Blacksmith, carried a bible throuhgout the war, never willingly went into church again. After the war ASL became a 'file maker'. Was very political in the Union movement. Because of this was out of work in the depression,(therefore very poor).Back in work WW2 when he was a pacifist but a Fireman. Became a Sheffield Counseller (David Blunkett had the seat after ASL retired). Lived at 2 Tideswell Rd Firth Park till he retire in 1970s. Then lived near Downham Market.
