2510 | On the 1841 census, Edmund and Sarah are living in the household of John and Elizabeth ALLEN, but as well as child George there's an Ann PETTIT b 1836/7. She would be born well before Edmund and Sarah's marriage - also as noted above, both Edmund and brother Benjamin married an ALLEN. Always relishing a challenge, I thought this worthy of a little investigation this evening. I found Ann in Odell in the 1851 census with correct age - as the daughter of Benjamin and Mary, and together with their younger children! I initially couldn't find a record for Mary ALLEN's baptism at all, but bizarrely there's an entry for two different Sarah ALLEN baptised the same day! The original record (Harrold independent church) gives the explanation - the minister has written in a single entry that he has baptised together in July 1817 two children, both called Sarah ALLEN and the children of John and Elizabeth, one born 1815, the other born 1817. This is clearly a mistake! The 1841 and 1851 censuses show Mary ALLEN and Mary PETTIT, wife of Benjamin respectively as born 1815/6 - in the former she's in Carlton, Bedfordshire as a lacemaker, and in 1851 she's in Odell, where both herself and Ann (see above) are lacemakers. The 1861 census indicates Sarah, wife of Edmund, is born 1817/8. So, the answer seems to be that Benjamin and Edmund married sisters Mary and Sarah ALLEN respectively, elder brother marrying elder sister, and that the minister should have written that he baptised sisters Mary and Sarah ALLEN the same day. It seems that Ann is Benjamin and Mary's child (if so, about 6 years before marriage!), and that she was being looked after in the ALLEN household (her grandparents), where her uncle and aunt (Edmund and Sarah) were also living following their marriage the year before, together with their child George. !Source: Mike Sasse 06/09/2015 email | PETTIT, Ann (I45081)

Deputy Registrar the 4th February 1786 at near quarter after two o'clock in the afternoon, John Gumbleton Drew Sworn February 4th 1786. John Moore, Registrar. _____________________________________________ The above document was valuable in tracing Catherine DREW's parentage. It gave her grandfather Francis DREW of Bishopstown, Co.Waterford, her father John DREW of Bishopstown, Co. Waterford and her brother John Gumbleton DREW. This proved Susanna GUMBLETON sister of Richard GUMBLETON of Castle Richard, as Catherine's mother. This was quoted in 'Drew of Strand House' in Burke's Landed Gentry published in1848. In the early years of their marriage they lived on their land, Cloyne Priest, Co. Cork, (Gentlemen's Residences, by Ambrose LEET, Pub.1814.). It was here that their first children were born. Walter and Catherine ATKIN's first two children were daughters, Mary born abt. 1787 and Susanna ATKIN born abt. 1788. Mary was probably named for Walter's mother, though this has not yet been proven. Susanna was named for her mother's mother Susanna DREW. The lack of surviving Parish Baptismal Registers for the Cloyne Diocese has made it difficult to prove the 'order' of the children born, though it is safe to say that Mary was the eldest as this was the term used in a Marriage Settlement registered in 1807. Eldest son Walter ATKIN jun. was born abt. 1789. Married his distant cousin Arabella DREW in 1815. John Drew ATKIN was born abt 1791. Married Georgina ROBERTS in 1826. James Richard ATKIN appears to be the third son born. He married Catherine ROGERS in 1827. Walter and Catherine's youngest son was William Francis ATKIN who married Alicia STEWART in 1826 . Though it is not known how the 'Wheat Riots' of the latter 1790'sthat occurred in the Youghal area, affected them, their shift to AtkinVille, Douglas, just south of Cork City was possibly influenced by these events. A Registered Deed # 518.227.341438 Regarding the land called Barnhill also later called Atkinville. Memorial of an Indented Deed of Mortage of 2 Oct. 1799 between Walter ATKIN of the City of Cork, Esq of the 1st part, Simon DRING of Annemount in the Co. of Cork Esq. of the other part, whereby Walter ATKIN did grant ors ors ors onme undivided half or ? moiety of the Lands of Castle Treasure and Ardlaig (?) in the South Liberties of the City of Cork, also the Lands of Carduff orse Barnhill formerly in the occupation of James ELLIS deceased, 66 acres near Douglas. Registered 5 Oct 1799. The above lands were leased by Walter ATKIN for many years and Barnhill became known as Atkinville. After the move to Atkinville, Douglas, their youngest daughter Catherine Hariot ATKIN was baptised there on the 6th Dec 1801, by the Rev. John BUSTEED. Douglas, in the Parish of Carrigaline, is described as being situated in the South East Liberties of the City of Cork. Here the family lived in their Townland of Atkinville, just south of Douglas. Atkinville appears on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1847. Tutors educated the sons. There were several good private tutors and small schools in the area. Their second born son John Drew ATKIN was apprenticed to R. FOOT in the Trinity Term of 1810 to begin his training as an attorney-at-law.(King's Inns Admission Papers 1607-1867, edited by Edward KEANE, P.BERYL & Thomas U. SADLER (Dublin: The Irish Manuscripts Commission,1982.) Unfortunately no admission papers for his entry survive. Walter and Catherine ATKIN's daughter Susanna married Richard Garde DAVIS in 1806, and a year later eldest daughter Mary married Townsend BEAMISH in 1807. Catherine ATKIN's health suddenly deteriorated and on the 27th of July 1810 she died at their home Atkinville, near Douglas. Catherine was laid to rest in the Carrigaline Parish Church graveyard, in Douglas on the 30th of July. Burial Registers, St. Luke's Church, Douglas. '30 July 1810 .... Barnhill Co.Cork Cork Walter ATKIN Cloyne Priest Co.Cork Youghal Walter ATKINS By 1813 Mary (ATKIN) BEAMISH had been widowed and her only son had died in early childhood. Mary's second marriage took place in 1813 to Thomas Wade FOOTT son of James FOOTT of Springfort, Co.Cork, Ireland. The Marriage Licence Bonds Index 1815: Walter ATKIN jun. to Arabella DREW. Though the original Deed did not survive the Four Courts fire, it was fortunate that a Memorial of an Indented Deed was made by Walter ATKIN the younger and Arabella's son in 1843, that quoted:- 'Registry of Deeds re a Deed dated 26th & 27th days of Jan1815......... Made between Walter Atkin the elder, Walter Atkin the younger described as the first part & Arabella Drew, eldest daughter of John Drew therein described as the second part, Richard Garde Davis &the Rev. This parcel of land is mentioned in the Memorial of an Indented Deed No. 665 243 458973 25th Oct 1813, recited and signed between Walter ATKIN, daug. Mary ATKIN & Townsend BEAMISH. Also in the Index... Walter ATKIN leased 100 acres 5pnds. 13shgs.10pence. By 1834 the above leases in perpetuity would have been inherited by Walter and Catherine ATKIN's eldest son Walter ATKIN jnr. in 1828 after the death of his father. Unfortunately Walter ATKIN snr. did not see the last two grandchildren born to his son. In January 1828 Walter ATKIN of Atkinville died at his home in Douglas. It is possible that Robert ATKINopened another haberdashery in Newtonbarry, and possibly lived above theshop for a period of time. Their son, also Robert who married FrancesWHEELOCK was a hosier in Newtonbarry where he lived and had a shop. Robert Atkin definitely had a haberdashery in Wexford town and was stillalive in 1806, because he bed and boarded some itinerant Methodistministers in that year. | ATKIN, Robert (I3876)
