2214 | Died 4 days after giving birth to Bernard Darwin. Notes from http://www.findagrave.com/ "Frank married and brought his charming young Welsh bride, Amy Ruck, ... had been school friends of Amy's brothers, and had visited her family at Pantlladw." (qv Edna Healey, 2001) Amy Richenda Darwin (nee Ruck) is buried in Holy Trinity Church, Corris, Wales; in her letters to him she slips easily into Welsh; Pantlladw was paradise, her home a 'tiny grey house set on a little plateau carved out of a hill side'." (qv Edna Healey, 2001). According to a letter written by Charles Darwin to his close friend, Joseph Dalton Hooker: " I never saw anyone suffer so much as poor Frank. He has gone to N. Wales to bury the body in a little church-yard amongst the mountains". Gravestone reads: "Gwywa a gwelltyn syrth y blodewyn ond gair ein Duw ni a saif byth" or "the grass withereth, the flower fadeth but the word of our god shall stand for ever" (from Isaiah). | RUCK, Amy Richenda (I0057)

2234 | Dorothy Cockburn (?) notes, dated 26 Oct 1990, when Dorothy would be about 84. Abbotscroft was the Young family home, and that photograph of all the uncles was taken there. It is a lovely old country house, with about 7 acres of grounds, orchards etc. As a school fried of mine, Betty Wilson, and her family lived there after the Youngs, I know it well, for Betty and I were great friends, and I was often there. It was about 6 miles from where we lived and anyhow, that is the story of dear Abbotscroft (Carnmoney cemetery is the nearest to it) I asked Stanley once to take me to see it but he said NO, it is now a riding school and quite ruined for me. I can remember it when the Youngs were there. it is a few miles down the coast from Belfast. You say you like to hear family news, so that is a bit more for you to digest. There was a long tree-lined drive to the front door with pines or firs in front. I have a photograph of myself in front of it in a very old-fashioned pram. Over 80 years ago! There was a round pond with daffodils circling it (left of the photograph)and an old tree (oak or apple) which had bunches of mistletoe growing out of its trunk. I have many happy recollections of Abbotscroft. | YOUNG, James (I2583)

2235 | Dorothy Cockburn notes: CUMMING - Descended from a Norman noble, the Cummings became powerful in Scotland. In the reign of Alexander III there were three Cumming Earls: Buchan, Menteith and Atholl. By a marriage with the sister of of John Baliol, and descent from king Duncan 'The Red Comyn' Lord of Badenoch had a strong claim to the Scottish crown. After the despatch of this man by the dagger of Robert the Bruce in the Church of the Minories (Greyfriars)in Dumfries, the power of this branch of the family was destroyed, and the COMYNs of Altyre took the lead. Through marriage with the Gordons of Gordonstoun, the name Gordon-Cumming was adopted by the Altyre branch, now baronets of Gordonstoun. (Both Oliver and Uncle Ollie were called Oliver Gordon) | CUMMING, Gershom Gourlay (I2586)

2236 | Dorothy Cockburn notes: Of the Young family, I know very little, except that they were farming people in Co Tyrone. Our grandfather (James Young) was with a firm of ships' supply merchants and eventually held a business of his own, and part owner of some cargo boats which traded mostly with the Scandinavian Countries. He first lived in Londonderry, and then in and near Belfast, and seems to have been very prosperous. He was a tall, slim, dark man, and very quiet. | YOUNG, James (I2583)

2239 | Dorothy Cockburn notes: The Cummings, our grandfather's people, are much better known to me. They lived in a nice old Georgian house in Broughty Ferry, on the Tay, near Dundee. Gershom, our great-grandfather, was an artist and engraver, and was one of the founders of the Orchar (?) gallery in B Ferry. By his first wife, Anne Hedderwick, he had grandmama, Annie, and by his second wife, two sons and a daughter, none of whom had any children. The last member of the family, great-aunt Mary, died in a park shelter about 1922, or so. She left the house to her church, but it is now privately owned again. Grandmama was small and fair, a fine musician, and accomplished in the Victorian way. I remember her and my grandfather very well. They were married in Glasgow from an aunts house, at Dalhousie Street, in October 1863. | CUMMING, Gershom Gourlay (I2586)

2241 | Dorothy Cockburn notes: French grandmother (Who? not sure) Nell Atkin - Anne Hedderwick died when their daughter Annie was born. A French ancestress on the Cumming side (Gershon's mother ?) was possibly a refugee from the revolution. RA - I can find no reference to this. Friends of Dundee City Archives – Howff Graveyard of Dundee lists cause of death as 'Child Bed' | HEDDERWICK, Ann Kinnimond (I2595)

2250 | Eldernell and Bulimba houses: Hemmant was evidently quite a builder. In Brisbane, he commissioned ‘Eldernell’ in 1869, designed by the prominent Brisbane architect James Cowlishaw. It is described as ‘a fine example of a mid-Victorian stone dwelling, which is unusual in Brisbane’. Now it is the home to the Anglical bishops of Brisbane. On his return from Queensland, in 1891-93 William Hemmant built a very extravagant and substantial house called Bulimba, and named after his constituency in Brisbane, Bulimba. The details of the construction are lovingly detailed in The Builder; 1891 (1). The house was sold on William Hemmants’ death in 1916, and the Sale Particulars and the Sale photographs are held in the National Archives. (2) This house was demolished in 1933. 1. https://manchestervictorianarchitects.org.uk/buildings/bulimba-kippington-sevenoaks 2. https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/results/?searchType=HE+Archive+New&search=bulimba | HEMMANT, William (I2547)
