1758 | Charles Taylor, who took the photograph of Chinese schoolchildren in June, 1964, when he was The Globe and Mail bureau chief in China, was the only son of noted Canadian industrialist and horse-breeder, Edward Plunket (E.P.) Taylor. It was Charles Taylor, in fact, who took over the operation of his parents’ famed Windfields Farm after his father’s stroke in 1980. He wrote several books about his experiences as a foreign correspondent and was also a chairman of the Writers Union of Canada. The annual Canadian literary award now known as the RBC Taylor Prize was originally known as the Charles Taylor Prize, and was created by his widow, Noreen, and sister, Judith (Mappin), to honour his death-bed request for an award to encourage writers of Canadian non-fiction. | Taylor, Charles Plunket Bourchier (I0129)

Moses Browne(1704-1787)WORKS PROFILE COMMENTARY BIOGRAPHIES REFERENCE AUTHOR AS CRITIC navigate Moses Browne, born in Severn Stoke, Worcester, published his early poetry under the patronage of Viscount Molesworth; after the death of his patron he struggled to support a growing family as a pen-cutter. Edward Cave published a number of Browne's poems in the Gentleman's Magazine (1733-50) where they sometimes appeared under the pseudonym "Astrophil." Later in life Browne found belated success as a devotional writer; Lord Dartmouth and the countess of Hertford were among his patrons. At the instigation of the evangelical writer James Hervey Browne was ordained in 1753; he was vicar of Olney, and later chaplain of Morden College and Vicar of Sutton in Lincolnshire. 1763 | Conningsby ATKIN the second son of the Rev. Walter ATKIN of Leadenton and his wife Elizabeth CONNINGSBY, was baptized on the 8 May 1805 at Midleton, Co. Cork, Ireland. 5th Regt & 44th Regt. A Regiment of Dragoons arrayed in 1745 Conyngsby Atkin (Lieut) (Ref: GO Ms 608 (Milita Lists 1761) - page 130, National Library Dublin) At some time in his adult life Conningsby either married or took a common law wife Dorcas ROCHE, earning the displeasure of his pious father the Rev. Walter and probably the rest of the family also, for it is believed that after the Rev. Walter's death in 1741, the families never spoke again. Dorcas ROCHE alias CLARKE may have been a Roman Catholic as many of the ROCHE families in that area were, and this also would have been indiscreet for the son of a Cleric of the Established Protestant Church of Ireland. Conningsby and Dorcas had two sons; 1. James ATKIN. 2. William ATKIN. The Reverend Walter ATKIN's Will signed on the 16 November 1741, charges- "Second Son Conningsby Atkin to and shall forthwith and within One Month after Application be made or Notice Given him, turn away Discharge and Abandon a certain Woman Called Dorcas Roche otherwise Clarke who is now sayed to keep In his house" the judge of his good intentions was to be the Parish Minister, none other than his older brother the heir to all, Rev. John Thomas ATKIN, Quoted; "thereof within the said Time shall give a reasonable Satisfaction or Proof to his parish Minister my said Son John Thomas Atkin, And also shall Reasonably Satisfie his said parish Minister that he will not thenceforth in anywise Entertain hold or keep up any further Acquaintance or Correspondance with her this Dorcas Roche Otherwise Clarke ." Of course it was not surprising that Conningsby was disinherited. At least he remained loyal to his 'wife' and children, but the family then became financially disadvantaged and ostracised by the Leadington Atkin family. 020221 @ Registry of Deeds, Henrietta Street, Dublin 1 Book Page memorandum 44 129 2807 Lease and release 6/7 Jan 1724 of Dromaddabegg and Parkeuakelly (110 Irish acres) in barony Imokilly bought for £300 by Walter ATKIN on 11/12 Oct 1720 as £300, part of marriage portion of his daughter Catherine, to Henry WIDENHAM an attorney of HM court of Exchequer in Ireland; witness Coningsby Atkin of Leddenstown Gent Book 194. The vicissitudes of this venerable mansion-house are many, and bear veritable witness to the conservative spirit of the several owners from time to time. After passing through the hands of Sir Walter Raleigh, it came into the possession of the Earl of Cork, from whom it was rented fora residence in 1616 by Sir Laurence Parsons, Knt., Attorney General for the Province of Munster and Recorder of Youghal. In 1661, January 17th,Laurence Parsons, Esq., of Birr in the King¹s County, grandson of Sir Laurence, conveyed for £135 the stone house, the malt house etc and the walls encompassing same, to Robert Hedges of Beaconstown, Co Kildare,Esq. for 1,000 years at a peppercorn yearly, with the rent reserved to the Earl of Cork, being a new Almanack yearly. On 24th February, 1670,William, afterwards Sir William Hedges, son of the above-mentioned Robert, sold the house for £340 to John Atkin of Youghal, who, by will dated 20th October, 1705, demised the house to his grandson, John Hayman,M.P. for Youghal, in the possession of which family it continued until the death of Walter Atkin Hayman, Esq., 5th June, 1816. It subsequently came into the hands of Mr J.W. Pim, from whom the fee simple was purchased by H.E. Governor Pope Hennessy, K.B., now Governor of Hong Kong, whose estate it is.² Cork: 29th April, 1878 Ref: The Council Book of the Corporation of Youghal 1610 - 1659 and1690 - 1800 edited by R.
